Talking about innovation… a rather unusual story came back to me recently.
The story of Angelo Dalle Molle, a philanthropist and truly eclectic man.
In the 1950s, Dalle Molle invented Cynar, a bold bitter aperitif (amaro) made from 13 herbs and plants, with its key ingredient being the artichoke (Cynara scolymus).
He built a hugely successful company based on this strange, herbal recipe, but his real legacy came after he sold Cynar.
Instead of retiring, he dedicated the rest of his life to visionary philanthropy, focused on:
• Technology
• Ethics
• The future of humanity
🧠 In 1971, he founded the Dalle Molle Foundation and went on to create some of the first European research centers for AI and computational linguistics:
• IDSIA – Institute for Artificial Intelligence
• ISSCO – Computational Linguistics
• TIS – Telematics & Information Systems
He believed technology should serve humans, not the other way around.
💬 We still need more Dalle Molles in Europe.
And you? Do you know other stories of European innovators?
